Science Fair judging starts tomorrow! Please keep in mind that students will not be with their projects during judging hours or visiting hours. Therefore, display items of value that could be included with the project are discouraged. Remember that the poster should say it all! Also include the research paper, notes, and the science fair notebook to illustrate all the hard work and research you put into the project.
Please come on Friday during the hours of 8:00 - 5:00 to see Butler 5th and 6th Grade Science Fair!

NoodleTools is another great source for fine tuning your research topic. Ms. Tucker's class just needs to have the research up through the "Analysis" section finished by November 28th. Please feel free to email Ms. Tucker if you have any further questions or concerns.
Thanks!
Thanks!
Research Paper
Please note that for the November 28th due date, both Ms. Tucker and Ms. Bauman want the students to have the research paper completed through the "Analysis" section. Please see the example paper as a reference. The "Methodology" section will be completed after the Hypothesis and Procedure is determined. The "results" section will be completed after the experimental testing is complete. Papers may be neatly printed, but typed is preferred. Anyone having printer issues on the home front can certainly email the file to your student's teacher, and we will be happy to print it out at school. Remember - if your project is very specific, you want to explore the related background knowledge so you are well informed about your topic area. For example, if testing different soaps for how well they clean your hands, you may want to investigate how bacteria (germs) are spread, what kind of environment germs prefer, the ingredients in soap that kill germs, the ingredients in the soap you choose to test, what kind of "germs" are on our hands, etc..
Thanks to our awesome school librarians, below are some research sites that you may find helpful.
www.kidsyahoo.com
www.kidshealth.com
www.kidsclick.com
www.sciencewithme.com
www.sciencemadesimple.com
and don't forget www.google.com (it helps to type "for kids" after your search request)
If you don't know where to start, begin by typing in the theme of your question followed by "science project for kids". For instance in the case above try it: type "which soap cleans better science project for kids". You'll see that you get tons of hits. You most likely won't find all of them applicable, but they can lead you to good information or give you an idea of what else to search for. Sometimes an article will have references attached to it that you could look at and use for your project. Happy reseaching!

Sixth Grade Research Paper
Here is an example of a good research paper, as well as a format for how we will be organizing our research. (see below)
For Bauman's and Tuckers's class: We've been having individual meetings with students to narrow their ideas down to the final topic proposal. We will have met with everyone by Friday. Once you have your final topic, it is time to research!
We've been working on how to write a research paper in class, and we've given them a specific way to do it that will ease the burden on them. Each student has a hard copy of the files listed below. We gave them an example of another student's work, and then a copy on which to record their own research. I would like them to have five information sources that relate to their topic by Wednesday, at least one book and at least one internet source. As soon as they get some resources, they should start compiling the information they need. (Bauman's class has library on Tuesday, so do a search on our school library to see if there is anything available on your topic.) You can access our library through the Butler Website- (we showed them how to get there.) A trip to the County Library would probably be beneficial as well.
If your student has selected a science fair topic from Science Buddies, or another like source, key words and subtopics to research are usually recommended. If your student came up with an original question, they may have to do a bit more digging to find some valid sources.

For the Research portion of their project, they will be required to complete a formal research paper. Students have already been given a packet outlining requirements and due dates.
A few resources that may prove helpful:
Science Buddies
As a heads up, here is a list of each portion and its respective due date FOR 6TH GRADE ONLY:
Project Proposal due November 7th
Research due November 28th
Hypothesis & Materials due November 30th
Experimental Design due December 5th
Observations &Data Collection due January 14th
Graphing due January 16th
Analysis & Conclusions due January 18th
Display Board due January 27th
School Science Fair on February 1st-3rd
Below is a copy of the Student Science Fair Notebook.
If your student loses or forgets to bring home their notebook, please copy a new one or refer to the file below. This notebook is what we will use to monitor each stage of their project. Please reference each page with the due dates above.
